To be released: Second edition of FAÇADE Webinar Series

Last updated on: Published by: laetitia.marrot

In December, the first episode of the FAÇADE Webinar Series started. During the webinars, various topics related to sustainable materials, environmental impact of eco-friendly solutions, new trends for facade materials, were presented. Participants provided enthusiastic feedback, and enjoyed the “New ideas that were presented” and the “Short and concise” form of the webinars.

With this success, we are pleased to announce the Second edition of FAÇADE Webinar Series. The topics of the monthly webinars will be announced here on the news section. Stay tuned!

The next speaker Doc. dr. Tanja Bagar, Director of the International Institute for Cannabinoids, will talk about Hemp as the source of nutrients and essential phytochemicals.

Why a collaboration with the CIRAD in France?

Last updated on: Published by: laetitia.marrot

Dr Laetitia Marrot just completed a 2 weeks Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) in the BioWooEB research unit of the CIRAD institute (Agricultural Research for Development) in Montpellier, France.

The researchers of the BioWooEB unit focus on the valorization of Mediterranean and tropical lignocellulosic biomasses for materials, energy and bioproducts applications. They are experts in the characterization of biomasses and optimization of the processes for their valorization, especially at the local scale in developing countries.

The STSM was supported and funded by the COST Action CONTEXT CA17107 “European Network to connect research and innovation efforts on advanced Smart Textiles”. In this context, the mission consisted in characterizing the properties of bio-carbon materials made from hemp, for use as UV stabilizer for the protection of textiles. The full characterization (chemical and elemental compositions, porosity, specific surface, calorific value, etc.) of the bio-carbon particles will provide answers to link their properties with their manufacturing process and will allow the production of bio-carbon with controlled microstructure.

Beside state-of-the-art laboratories, the CIRAD institute owns a “Biomass and energy” platform with semi-industrial equipment for thermo-chemical conversion of biomass (pyrolysis, torrefaction, combustion and gazeification), and an amazing xylotheque gathering 34.000 samples from 8400 different wood species. Definitely worth to have a look!

This collaboration between the InnoRenew CoE and CIRAD ensures knowledge exchange and complementarity of the research topics of both institutes.

In this video you will find out more about the InnoRenew CoE’s composites preparation laboratory. My colleague Matthew Schwarzkopf presents our twin-screw compounder and single screw extruder unit, and I present the tube furnace which produces the bio-carbon for the FACADE project. With my colleague Dr. Sudha Esakkimuthu, specialist in analytical techniques (GC, HPLC and SEC), we brainstorm methods to identify and value the gas and liquid by-products of the carbonization process. Feel free to contact us for more information and collaboration!

Welcome

Thank you for visiting the website of the FACADE project.

You will find here a description of the project and hopefully useful information on various fields including undervalued resources (hemp and beech wood more specifically), carbonization methods, properties of biobased carbon (biochar), materials for sustainable facades.

Check out the previous and upcoming activities in the news section, and feel free to contact me and share ideas and opinions!

Below some photos of ongoing carbonization of hemp stems… Looking forward to discussing research!
