The fifteenth and last episode of the webinar series will take place on 16 January 2022 at 11:00. The speaker will be Dr. Laetitia Marrot, Researcher and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action fellow at the InnoRenew CoE, and Assistant with a Doctoral Degree at the University of Primorska, Slovenia. She will present the main results of the FAÇADE project and open the discussion on the foreseen potential of bio-carbon materials.
Participation to the Night of Ideas 2022 in Ljubljana
The Night of Ideas is an event initiated in 2016 and aiming at discussing the major issues of our time. The Night of Ideas happens every year, on the last Thursday of January. The French Institute invites all cultural and educational institutions in France and on all five continents to celebrate the free flow of ideas and knowledge by offering, on the same evening, conferences, meetings, forums and round tables, as well as screenings, artistic performances and workshops, around a theme each one of them revisits in its own fashion.
For the 7th Night of Ideas, which will take place in Ljubljana in Slovenia on 27 January 2022, the theme “(Re)building together” has been chosen to explore the resilience and reconstruction of societies faced with singular challenges, the solidarities and cooperation between individuals, groups and states, the mobilization of civil societies and the challenges of building and making our objects.
During this event, I will present “The Materials of Tomorrow” with my colleague Pr. Michael Mrissa, and highlight amongst the promising materials, the activities carried out within the FACADE project. Feel free to join us!
Webinar 14: Bioactive-releasing polymers: A supercritical approach for CO2 valorization
The fourteenth episode of the webinar series will take place on 19 January 2022 at 11:00. The speaker will be Dr. Mathilde Champeau, Assistant Professor in Materials Engineering at the Universidade Federal do ABC, Brazil. She will talk about Bioactive-releasing polymers: A supercritical approach for CO2 valorization.
Your opinion about black coatings!
Did you participate in the survey we published in September? You might be curious to know the public opinion about black coatings… You will find below the response to the questionnaire. Thank you again for taking part of the survey and helping us shaping the next steps of the research.
Webinar 13: Lignin addition to increase performance of polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer
The thirteenth episode of the webinar series will take place on 22 December 2021 at 11:00. The speaker will be Dr. Esakkiammal Sudha Esakkimuthu, Researcher and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action fellow at InnoRenew CoE. She will talk about Lignin addition to increase performance of polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer.
Increasing collaboration between France and Slovenia
Today I had the great opportunity to meet with the French ambassador in Slovenia, Her Excellency Florence Ferrari and associates from the French Institute of Slovenia. Together with my French colleagues from InnoRenew CoE and the University of Primorska, we introduced ourselves and identified existing collaborations between Slovenia and France. Discussions with the ambassador allowed us to highlight new ways for scientific, academic, and cultural collaborations that we will attempt to implement in the near future.
If you are interested in doing some research with us at the InnoRenew CoE, please check for example the opportunities of funding given by the Erasmus+ programme:

Final edition of FACADE series
Time flies and the FAÇADE project will end in March 2022, so I am pleased to announce the Final edition of the FAÇADE Webinar Series.

Hoping to see you at the webinars!
Webinar 12: Biomacromolecules from marine biomass: Masterpieces in the development of innovative materials
The twelfth episode of the webinar series will take place on 17 November 2021 at 11:00. The speaker will be Dr. Susana Fernandes, Associate Professor at the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour, France, Principal Investigator Chair for MANTA – E2S UPPA, IPREM, France and guest Researcher at the Uppsala University, Sweden. She will talk about Biomacromolecules from marine biomass for the development of innovative materials.
Other ways to value hemp by-products: hemp reinforced biocomposites
The FACADE project aims at valuing hemp by-products and wastes from the cannabidiol industry through carbonization to produce biocarbon. But other ways could be followed to use this interesting biomass, in particular its fibres. Hemp fibres are very strong, they are among the strongest bast fibres, and are available worldwide. Once extracted from the hemp stem, they can be used to reinforce polymeric (plastic) matrices by combining strength and low density, which make them able to compete with glass fibres (comparable mechanical performances for an equal weight of fibres). The reinforcement of bioplastic (PLA) by hemp fibres waste was considered within a collaboration with Taltech University of Tallinn, Estonia. With my colleagues from the Renewable Materials Composite Group, we visited several amazing laboratories of the Taltech university.
Webinar 11: Seismic strengthening of buildings with cross-laminated timber plates on the façade
The eleventh episode of the webinar series will take place on 20 October 2021 at 11:00. The speaker will be Dr. Iztok Šušteršič, Research Group Leader of the Sustainable Building with Renewable Materials group at the InnoRenew CoE, and Assistant Professor at the University of Primorska, Slovenia. He will talk about Seismic strengthening of buildings with cross-laminated timber plates on the façade.
What do you think about black coatings?
As the research progresses, we would like to know your interest in using black coatings for various wooden surfaces that can be found on furnitures, facades or buildings. Your opinion is precious to shape the next steps of the research, and we would be very pleased to see your participation for the 5 minutes survey we prepared below:
Come and meet me at the European Researchers’ Night!
On the 24th of September at the rectorate of Koper, come to meet with me and discuss science from 9 am to 3 pm at the EU corner! You will be able to see the first samples developed under the project, give your opinion about it, and then contribute to improve the results!
Click here for more information and look at the other events that will be presented in the European Researchers’ Night
Thank you all for coming! With my colleague and MSCA fellow Dr Sudha Esakkimuthu, we had a great time presenting our research. Looking forward to the next year’s edition. Special thanks to Vesna Grahovac for the organization of the event.
